Description: So, you
did say that you liked twists and turns for your Miata, right?
Well, here’s your chance to prove it, again.
Come and join us for our Second Annual Twisted Weekend on some of the
most twisty roads known to man. Don’t
believe me? Just ask some of
our members that were on last September’s run!
We will certainly keep our speeds to a tolerable level of course, so
that both drivers and navigators can enjoy the scenery as well as the turns.
I guarantee this will be one of the most exciting weekend drives you
will find! A word of caution
though, the driver’s arms may get a little tired by the end of the run!
We will leave the start at
approximately 9:00 am on Saturday and travel north on scenic mountain roads
like Angeles Forest Highway and through the windmills of Tehachapi to
exciting roads like Caliente-Bodfish and Walker Basin on our way to lunch at
Lake Isabella.
In the afternoon, We’ll
travel from 3,000’ up to 9,000’ and back down to 3,000’, as we wind
our way out to the Mojave and climb over the Sherman Pass with its 69 miles
of twists and turns on our way to our destination for the evening, the Golden
Trout Lodge, which sits right next to the Kern River.
Dinner that evening is at
the picturesque Johnny McNally’s, just up the road. McNally’s is famous for their steak and seafood; perhaps
you’ll want to try their 28oz. filet mignon or, for big eaters, their
40oz. porterhouse. After
dinner, you may wish to drive around Lake Isabella to enjoy the numerous
stars in the early summer sky or just socialize on the deck at the lodge.
We’ll have another
exciting day of driving on Sunday, starting with a trek down the mysterious
23S16, a little traveled road that snakes through the Sequoia forest on the
west side of the Kern River. We’ll
have lunch at Lake Isabella again, before taking on the highlight of the
weekend, Breckenridge Road, 42 miles of twists and turns and bushes so close
to the road in spots that you can reach out and touch them as you go by.
Our weekend will end at the
Grapevine at about 3:00 pm. The
total mileage covered on this weekend is long, at approximately 400 miles
from beginning to end, but will include plenty of rest stops along the way.
For those that make the
entire journey, we will have pins, dash plaques, and window stickers for
you, which will inform everyone that “I survived the second Twisted
Weekend”. If you’re
extremely lucky, perhaps you will pull out the lucky “Yellow Button”
which will entitle you to free accommodations on our next Twisted Weekend
event. Just ask Barry
Rosenberg, our winner from last year!
I hope to see you all
there.
Accommodations: The
Golden Trout Lodge - You may make reservations for Saturday evening by
calling Alice Schlick, 760-376-6033 and asking
for a room in the SOCALM section of reserved rooms.
We have reserved all 22 rooms for this event, and three are already
reserved. So make your reservations quickly, and don’t get left out in the
cold! Price - $120.00,
tax included.
Corral
Campground - You may pitch a tent for the evening at the campground
directly across the street. However,
you will be roughing it, as there are no restrooms or water at the site. There are other campgrounds in the area, but rumor has it
that they fill up quickly during the summer.
For further information on campsites, please contact the Forestry
Office between 8:00 and 5:00 on weekdays at 760-376-3781.
Dinner
on Saturday - McNally’s has steak, seafood, and chicken.
Prices range widely, but average around $15-$17 per plate. I had the
porterhouse, and it was exceptional.
Breakfast
on Sunday - My recommendation is that since there are kitchenettes in
every room at the lodge, bring a couple of eggs in a cooler and cook breakfast
in the morning with your leftovers from Saturday evening.
The lodge is several miles above Kernville, which is a long way to go
for breakfast.
